A native son of the Pacific Northwest, John Albert Woodard studied under Jacob Lawrence, his most influential mentor and teacher, at the University of Washington. Like Lawrence, Woodard’s work, regardless of the medium, relies on sophisticated composition and close attention to the tension between the negative and positive shapes. John works simultaneously in three series: oil pastel and watercolor resists, pen and ink, and oils. We invite you to visit all his works for a personal studio tour on Vashon Island, WA.
